what is meiosis? it is the type of cell division by which germ cells are produced
what happens to the genetic material during meiosis? during meiosis, there is a reduction in the amount of genetic material
During interpase, what happens to the genetic material? it is the resting phase between successive mitotic divisions
What is the diploid number of chromosomes in humans 46
Mitosis results in 2 diploid cells
Meiosis results in? 4 haploid cells
What is a tetrad? This is where two homologous chromosomes line up during metaphase
What is a haploid cell? Haploid cells are cells that have half the amount of genetic material
what are diploid cells? diploid cells are cells with two copies of their genetic material
What are homologous chromosomes? homologous chromosomes are chromosomes that carry the same genes
What are some of the characteristics of homologous chromosomes? homologous chromosomes have the same length, they have a common centromere location.
When does crossing over occurs? prophase 1
When are terminal chiasmata seen? during metaphase I
What happens during anaphase I? one form of each chromosome move toward the poles
What happens to the homologous chromosomes during metaphase 1? the homologous chromosomes pairs align at the metaphase plate
In what stage of meiosis 1 do the chromosomes condense and become more visible? prophase 1
when do each set of sister chromatids pair up with its homologous pair of chromosomes? prophase 1
what happens in metaphase I? In metaphase I, tetrads line up at the equator
what happens in anaphase I? In anaphase I, the chromosomes move to the opposite poles
what happens in metaphase II? In metaphase II, the chromosomes line up at the equator
what happens in anaphase II? In anaphase II, the chromatids move to the opposite poles
During prophase II? the nuclear membrane breaks down
During metaphase II? the sister chromatides line up
