what does cardiovascular system consist of? it consists of the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries
what is the function of the cardiovascular system? the function of the cardiovascular system is to transport blood through out the body
what is the major function cardiovascular system? to circulate blood, deliver oxygen and nutrients to body tissues, remove CO2 and other waste
Describe the structure of the heart it is a hollow, muscular organ that has 4 chambers (2 atria and 2 ventricle)
How does blood flow in the heart? blood enters the right atrium, then flows to right ventricles, flows to lungs, then to left atrium and then left ventricle
Blood returning from the lungs enters the left atrium through the pulmonary vein
The left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body through the aorta
what is epicardium? it is a thin, external membrane around the heart
what is endocardium? it is the smooth inner lining of the heart and valves
what is myocardium? it is the muscular tissue of the heart
where is the heart located? it is located in the thoracic cavity
what is the approximate size of the heart? it is the size of a closed fist
The fibrous ring around the heart valves is sued for? support
The heart is made up of ____ muscle? cardiac muscle
what is the weight of the heart? about 300-400 grams
The right heart pumps blood through the? lungs
The left heart pumps blood through the? peripheral organs
what are the functions of the atria? functions as a receiving chammber
what is the function of the left atrium? it receives oxygenated blood returning to the heart from the lungs through the pulmonary vein
what is the function of the upper chamber? they act as connecting and receiving chambers
what is the function of the right atrium? it receives systemic venous blood through the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava and coronary sunius
what are ventricle? they are thick walled chambers. They are responsible for forcing blood out the heart
what is the function of the lower chambers? they act as contracting or pumping chambers
what is the function of the right ventricle? it pumps deoxygenated blood into pulmonary circulation through the aorta during ventricular systole
what is the function of the purkinje fibers? they provide for ventricular conduction system
what is the function of the internodal and intratrial pathway? it connects the SA and AV node
what is antrioventricular valve? it is a valve that prevents back flow of blood from ventricles to atria during ventricular systole
what is semilunar valve? it is a valve that prevents the back flow of blood from arteries to ventricles during ventricular diastole
where is Tricuspid valve located?, it is a valve located between the right atrium and right ventricle
where is Mitral valve located?, it is a valve located between left atrium & left ventricle
where is Aortic valve located? located between left ventricle & the aorta
where is pulmonary valve located? located between right ventricle & the pulmonary artery
what is cardiac cycle? it is a term used to describe the relaxation and contraction of the heart
_______ cells self stimulate and contract without external stimulation Autorhymic cells
what are cardiac muscles made of? they are made of actin and myofilaments
what is the papillary muscle? it arises from the endocardial and myocardial surface of the ventricles
cardiac cycle has two phases, name them systole and diastole
The contraction of the heart is also known as systole
The relaxation of the heart is also known as diastole
Parasympathetic stimulation reduces heart rate
Sympathetic stimulation ____ heart rate increases
what is Tachycardia? this is when heart rate is in excess of 100 bpm
what is Bradycardia? this is when the heart rate is less than 60 bpm
what is sinus arrhythmia? this is when the heart rate varies 5% during respiratory cycle and upto 30% during deep respiration
what does the SA nodel branch supply? supplies SA node
what does the right marginal branch supply? it supplies the right border of the heart
what does the posterior interventricular artery supply? it supplies both ventricles
what does the circumflex branch supply? it supplies the SA node
what does the left marginal supply? it supplies the left ventricle
what does the anterior interventicular branches (left anterior descending) supply? it supplies both the ventricles and interventricular septum
what is the coronary sinus it is the main vein of the heart
what is the great cardiac vein it is the main tributary of the coronary sinus
what is the oblique vein it is the remnant of SVC
what is systole? period of chamber contraction
what is diastole? period of chamber relaxation
what is cardiac cycle? all event of systole and diastole during one heart flow cycle
what is stroke volume? it is the amount of blood ejected with each heartbeat
what is cardiac output? it is the amount of blood pumped by the ventricles in liters per minute
what is preload? it is the degree of stretch of the cardiac muscle fibers at the end of distole
what is Aneurysm? it is an abnormal widening of portions of the artery due to weak blood vessel walls
what is coronary artery disease? this is a condition in which plaque builds up inside the coronary arteries that supply oxygen to heart muscle
what is the heart valve disease? it is a condition where one or more heart valves don't work properly
what is pericarditis? it is the inflammation of the pericardium that makes a rusting sound
what are arteries? they are elastic walled vessels that carry blood away from the heart
what are arterioles? they are small arteries that distribute blood to the capillaries
what are capillaries? they exchange oxygen, carbon dioxide, and solutes between the blood and the body tissues
what are venules? they are small veins that receive blood from capillaries
what are veins? they are low pressure vessels that transport blood back to the heart
