What are the requirements for the Child Tax Credit in the United States?

In order to claim the Child Tax Credit, you must have a qualifying child as defined by the IRS. The child must be under age 17 at the end of the tax year, be a U.S. citizen or national, and live with you for more than half the year.

The tax credit is worth up to $2,000 per child, depending on your income. If you have three or more qualifying children, you may also be eligible for the additional child tax credit, which could give you a refund even if you don’t owe any taxes.

To claim the Child Tax Credit, you’ll need to file a federal income tax return and include the child’s Social Security number on the return. If you’re claiming the additional child tax credit, you may need to fill out and attach Form 8812 to your return.
